Pregnancy and disability

Not all disabilities are visible. people who have a disability report biased care during pregnancy and a lack of understanding among providers of their birth intentions or needs for supportive services. the current maternal health services landscape is ableist by design. we want to change that.

Donor: National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities

We are conducting an in-depth study of risk factors associated with poor maternal and infant health outcomes in a Medicaid population with disabilities in Texas to better understand the disparities they face with respect to their racial and ethnic minority status, area-level socioeconomic conditions, and quality of healthcare. Developing effective interventions to eliminate these disparities requires a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between multiple levels of inequity and health indicators. Our goal is to add to our knowledge of severe maternal morbidity, low birthweight, small for gestational age, preterm birth, and neonatal mortality among people with disabilities in the U.S. and inform targeted interventions and policies aimed at reducing the health disparities experienced by this population into the future.
